THE SLATES FAMILY Service by Slates first began in 1979 by Steve Slates, who moved from Carrollton, OH to Lexington, KY in order to pursue a career in football with the University of Kentucky Wildcats. After graduation, Steve decided to remain in Lexington, KY and start a business—Service by Slates. For several years, he worked on multi-family residential and commercial projects during the day and then spent time in the ballpark to cheer on his sons during the evening. As the business—and his family—continued to grow, the whole crew would often pitch in to finish up the large jobs. In 2008, his youngest son, Blake, joined the business after finishing his college career at Western Kentucky University.
